Road safety must be of high concern in all of our lives. The roads have become very significant in our daily routine; we use it either as a pedestrian, motorists or cyclists. For the supply of the goods and services we need, roads act as a connector. With the vast development of the technology together with the increasing population, the vehicles and the people who use the roads have increased remarkably. Road safety has become a huge topic in society.
Now let’s take a peak into our daily road behaviors as a passenger or as a driver and how to keep up with road safety.
Let us identify what causes tragedies to drivers, simultaneously to all road users.
Always have a proper plan
This is very important in everything in our lives. It is very much beneficial for us to have a proper plan for what we are doing. Even day to day home activities matters a lot. We have evidenced a lot of accidents which are caused due to lack of planning. When we do not have a proper plan we tend to change our decisions very quickly. Just imagine if you are driving and just do whatever comes to your mind? No signal lights on turnings or you put your left signals and turning the vehicle to right? Just trying to U-turn when the sign says no ‘U-turn’? These kinds of tiny things can cause a huge effect on other drivers. Small neglectf can lead you to major injuries. So prepare your mind, before getting into your vehicle.
Always follow the road signs
This is a very important point if you are a driver. These things have been introduced to save the lives of the people. Therefore you must go through all the relevant safety signs and must educate enough to read and understand the meanings of them. If you are a well known about road signs then the probability of getting into injuries will reduce naturally.
Most commonly neglected road signs:
- Speed limit
- Stop
- No U-turn
- Crosswalk
- Handicap parking only

You must be in 100% consciousness to hold the responsibility as a driver. You may go to a party or a wedding and have some shots with your friends and relations. But remember to know your limits and remember to count the aftermath. Drinking can weaken our eyesight and thinking power. If you feel dizziness or feel not normal, take a step back and ask someone to drive your vehicle for you. If nobody is available, please park your vehicle safely and get a taxi to continue your journey. The overestimating on your capabilities not only cause you harm, but other innocent drivers and pedestrians also have to be the victims of your careless attitude. Keep enjoying your life by knowing your limits.
Asleep at the wheel
When you are tired you feel sleepy. It is natural and you can avoid it only up to some extent. Our body needs time to repair and deliver back freshly. Especially at night, it is a usual routing to the body to wait till we finish our things to gain the 8-hour rest. Therefore, if you are on a journey at night or feel exhausted after a long drive, please take a break by stopping the vehicle. If there are any coffee shop nearby have a sip. Talk to someone. Put some cold water to the face and get refreshed. Even after doing all of these you still feel the same; forget the journey and allow your body to sleep. You cannot control or take over the sleep. Do not ever let you and your passengers or other road users lives in danger by neglecting the sleepiness.
Use the seat belts
Now it is a law in every country to wear seat belts. Not only for the driver, it is very essential to all the passengers in car, van or SUV. It will prevent you from ejecting during an accident. 80% of the car accident deaths occur due not wearing the seat belts. Not only adults, but all the kids and toddlers traveling in the said vehicle must also properly be seated in an appropriate car seat which is according to to their size. No child should carry on laps. Wearing the seat belt for both passengers together, will not be useful. Be a responsible adult and do not ever leave your infants or toddlers alone in your vehicle.
Motorcyclists and cyclists have more danger on the road
Both the Motorcyclists and cyclists have no protection in an accident. The only protection they have is the helmet. So as a Motorcyclists and cyclists, always remember to wear a recommended helmet to prevent head injuries. Always follow the safety rules and ride on the correct lane. Dark clothes not suitable, easily visible mostly white-coloured clothes are recommended especially at night. Always on the headlights and never forget to put the signal lights. Never overestimate your skills for showoff, that would lead you to danger. You must remember that you also have the same rights and responsibilities as motorists. So be careful and ride safe.
- l Take a time to check your vehicle properly before getting into the vehicle. Regular checkups are very important. If you want to attend a place on-time, prepare everything early, work on to a plan, speed driving will not give you any options to fulfill your laziness. If there is a speed limit obey the limits. It will prevent you from killing your self as well as the other road users.
- l Do not attend to any electronic devices while driving or riding. Phone calls must be taken after stopping the vehicle properly.
- l If the vehicle breaks down on the road, turn on the hazard signal and look for help. Never get down from traffic to look into the matter. Take the vehicle to an undisturbed place and attend to it.
